Winter is in full swing here in Minnesota and I’m starting to get a little cabin fever and need to find things to do outside of the house. With snow and extremely low temps on the way, we likely won’t be getting out much as a family – it’s just too hard to get a one-year-old all bundled up (and really, who wants to be outside is 10 degree weather any way?).
If you read my previous post on my 2018 goals, you saw that I’m shooting to have at least one date night a month with my husband. We’re a pretty boring couple so these might be a little low-key for some people’s taste, but getting time away from the kids and enjoying each other’s company for a few hours is always a good thing for any marriage. So here’s a few ideas I’d like to try – hopefully they appeal to you as well.
- Pizza, beer and bowling. Bowling is one of mine and my husband’s favorite date activities to do. We went on our second date and actually spent our first anniversary at the bowling alley (i know, we’re really crazy, huh). Now that we have Ivy, bowling is a great way to get away for a few hours.
- Snow tubing or sledding and coffee. If you’re in a chilly climate like we are, why not embrace the weather and have some fun with it. There are some great hills around the Twin Cities metro area that would make for a fun day trip out in the snow. Cap off the date with a trip to a local coffee shop and warm up and catch up on some much needed adult conversation.
- Dinner and drinks. Have some new restaurants you’ve been eyeing up? Spend some time one night writing down all the restaurants and/or bars you would like to try and do it! Restaurant week in Minneapolis is the week after Valentine’s Day, which is a great time to try out someplace on your list but consciously watch what you’re spending.
- Shopping and lunch. This is an annual date day trip for my husband and I, typically after Christmas. We don’t usually exchange Christmas gifts, but instead plan a day to go shopping together and grab lunch so we can spend time together and scoop up some great post-Christmas deals.
- Shooting Range. So it’s a little untraditional, but nonetheless it’s a fun way to spend a few hours together. We recently went to a local shooting range and rented a couple guns, bought a few targets and made a competition out of it.
- Check out a local museum. From what I understand, there’s some cool museums around the Twin Cities, which would be a fun way to spend some time together and stretch your legs.
- Take a workout class. This suggestion definitely isn’t for everyone, but I hear they say couples who sweat together stay together (or something like that, right?). Maybe this is a new way to kick off a new habit of getting healthier as a couple, while holding each other accountable.
- Took a cooking class. Spice things up in the kitchen with a couple’s cooking class! I’ve found that you can usually choose what kind of menu items you want to learn to cook (breakfast, lunch, etc.) so try a few different ones to help mix up your weekly menu.
- Open House Tours. So this one might not be for everyone (my husband would hate it), but if you’re in the market to remodel or move, why not head out and tour some open houses or Parade of Homes tours to spark some ideas.
- Spa Day. Take some time to get some R&R at the spa for a few hours. Life gets stressful, so treat yourself to a couple’s massage and finish the day off with some time in the sauna. Find a spa that allows you to spend some time in the “relaxation room” so you can relax a little longer after your services.
I’ll be taking a few ideas from this list to make sure I keep on track with my “date” goal I set for 2018. We’ve tried a few of these out already so it’ll be fun to mix things up a bit.
Do you have some out-of-the-box date ideas to do during the winter months? Comment below – I’d love to add them to my list.

Have you ever tried ice skating? There are some great rinks out there.

Hi Jen! Yes, I have! I grew up in Roseville so I went to the John Rose Oval a lot! Another great winter idea! 🙂

My fiancé and I love going to museums! The MIA is our favorite. It’s free and I like the variety of types of art there.
My other favorite winter date idea is to cook a new meal together and then watch a show/movie that we wouldn’t normally watch.

I love the cooking and new show/movie idea! Although my husband and I can have a tough time finding a movie or show that will keep us both entertained 🙂

Museums are amazing! We live by a canal that is made into a huge skating rink in the winter so skating dates become a go-to for us as well!!

That sounds like so much fun! I think you guys have talked me into a new winter date activity.
